While HDTVs still hold the dominate position as the leading technology in home entertainment, projectors are quickly becoming more and more popular. The VPL-VW1100ES is slightly large for a home theater projector, though it is definitely impressive. It comes with a 2.1:1 motorized zoom lens with power lens shift and focus and also claims to have a ridiculous 2,000 lumen output, meaning that, in theory, you could own a 200" diagonal screen and still have a picture as bright as a typical movie theater. In addition to this, the projector also has 3D capabilities that are impressive and has a decent amount of 4K movies that are available to watch right now thanks to Sony's 4K download service and the optional 4K media player.

Here's the kicker and the part that will turn away, I'm assuming, 99% of you. The VPL-VW1100ES will cost you $28,000. Yeah, you read that right, twenty-eight THOUSAND dollars. So if you happen to be one of those one percenters everybody hates then you can enjoy what is arguably the greatest piece of home theater technology currently available on the market today. Oh, I forgot to mention that the media player that you absolutely have to have in order to utilize 4K (if you're too impatient to wait for Blu-ray UHD) will cost you an additional $700 so the actual cost is more around $30,000 once you factor in cost, taxes, etc...

So if you want the latest and greatest in home entertainment projection technology then the Sony VPL-VW1100ES could be the projector for you, provided you don't need a new car, a new house or you need to send any children to college anytime soon.

Sony Reveals Stunning 4K Short-Throw Projector

How much is too much? When will we, as consumers, be satisfied with what we have? The short answer probably never. In the ever growing field of visual technology, developers are hard at work making video devices that have pictures that are so crisp, so clear and so realistic that we will eventually think we are physically in the entertainment we are watching. The latest stab at this venture is 4K technology. 4K is the successor to what most of us have grown accustomed to, 1080p HD, and bills itself as UHD, or Ultra High-Definition. The technology has just recently started to creep into televisions and computer monitors but now even projector companies are getting in on the fun.

Back at CES 2014 consumers were given a taste of Sony's first attempt at a short-throw 4K projector that works as perfectly on walls as it does on projector screens. Well it didn't take Sony long to announce that not only is the projector going to be consumer ready this year but also that the US is getting THIS MONTH! In case you are unfamiliar with the technology, short-throw projectors allow you to have very large pictures without having to project the image from across the room. There are four different components that comprise the Life Space UX. Sony's demonstration of the technology suggest that you pair two projectors for optimal effect, though I can't imagine a lot of people would have a use for all these different projections all over your room. Regardless, a single short-throw 4K projector looks to be a nice option if you are looking for a truly high-end home entertainment setup.

In addition to the Life Space UX, Sony also announced that it will be making a portable version of the projector. This one is said to be easily packed up and taken with you wherever you go and is capable of projecting a 27" picture. However, I'm not entirely sure that there's even a market for projectors that small with that crisp of a picture quality but I digress. If you want the stunning Life Space UX ultra short-throw 4K projector from Sony then you better start saving as this bad boy will run you a hefty $50,000 (Fifty Thousand Dollars in case you thought that was a typo).

New Projectors Allow For 2x3D Viewing

Projectors seem to be getting more and more advanced as the days go by. With more advancements in overall resolution output and color contrast, we see many of the new products bleeding together. Not many of the new projectors offer anything different from each other, other than a brand name and subtle spec differences. 3D projectors offer the 3D experience that we've come to know and love. 2D allows for higher resolution rates and is the standard in the home theater system. What if there were a projector, or projectors, that could make 2D and 3D possible at the same time?

Researchers from the Kanagawa Institute of Technology in Japan have now made this possible.

Through using a pair of projectors working in tandem with one another, a "2x3D" image is displayed. This basically means that the image displayed can be viewed in both 2D and 3D simultaneously. There are specifications that will need to be met to view the 3D and 2D images on the same "screen though.

The projectors have the two separate images run through a specialized GPU in real-time. The GPU uses a series of advanced algorithms that allow both images to be displayed without having the "double" image that is accompanied with typical 3D imaging. This paired up with color mixing techniques also produced from the projectors' GPU, the 3D image will appear "invisible" unless viewed through polarized lenses.

This type of "screen sharing" is actually reminiscent of a 3D TV monitor from Sony's Playstation that allowed two players to play on the same full sized screen without seeing what the 2nd player would see. Through the TV's "SimulView", the monitor was able to perform the same basic principles as the Japanese projectors.

The one downside of the imaging is that the 2D image is half the contrast of the 3D image . But there could be prime uses for this product such as having two separate images being displayed at the same time without any screen overlay. Displaying in different languages for business meetings, or two separate graphs without overlap.

Sony's New VPL-HW50ES HD 3D Projector

Sony has just announced the launch of the new full HD 3D home cinema projector known as the VPL-HW50ES. This new home cinema projector has been designed around Sony's "Reality Creation" technology and, according to the company, has a brightness of up to 1,700 lumens. In addition to that, Sony explained that the high brightness level was achieved by improving the efficiency of the built-in lamp as well as the optical block optimization.

The new VPL-HW50ES comes with two modes, a Bright Cinema mode and a Bright TV mode. It is expected that whenever you operate the device in one of these two modes there is a 30% improvement to the overall brightness of the picture compared to the previously released models from Sony. One major point worth mentioning is that Sony was also able to achieve these brightness levels without compromising on the color reproduction, something that other developers have trouble with.

The VPL-HW50ES model will also come with a contrast ratio of 100,000:1 and a contrast enhancer that is designed to analyze each scene and then optimize the contrast in real-time. The enhancer is capable of adjusting for dark and bright parts of the image by itself while some functional upgrades, like a 3D sync transmitter, wider lens and noise reduction, show the clear improvements this HD model has made over its predecessors.This projector also has a vertical lens shift in the range of +/- 71% and a noise level reduced to 21dB.

This appears to be a pretty good HD projector and one that is perfectly suited for home entertainment. Sony is known for making top-of-the-line home entertainment projectors and this one appears to be up there with the best of Sony's other offerings. The fact that it offers full 1080p HD along with full 3D is something that most home entertainment junkies will eat right up. Three New Fixed Installation Projectors from Sony

Sony has just announced three brand new projector models that are aimed specifically at organizations that have a need for a fixed installation projector. The company is ready to launch the all new VPL-CW275, VPL-FH31 and VPL-FH36 over the course of the next couple of months with the target markets being universities, corporations, museums and medical applications that use fixed installation projectors for lectures or presentations.

All three of these new projectors will be equipped with BrightEra 3LCD Inorganic Panel technology in addition to energy efficient features and flexible installation options, allowing you to literally have the most efficient setup possible based on your situation. 

The VPL-CW275, which is a part of Sony's existing CW225 line, comes with one of the brightest outputs that the company offers. In addition to that, this projector has a new Picture Muting feature that allows for the picture to be switched off instantaneously for a brief period of time by pushing a single button. Also included with the VPL-CW275 is a lens shift range and screen fitting feature that allows you to easily adjust the device after installing. 

The VPL-FH31 and VPL-FH36 projectors are both enhanced replacements for Sony's existing VPL-FH30 and VPL-FH35 projectors. They are also said to offer the best in class image quality with both projectors providing WUXGA 1,920 x 1,080 resolution and full HD compatibility.

It is expected that the new VPL-BW120S short-throw projector from Sony will hit store shelves at the end of August, which is in about four days, so be on the lookout for this device if you are considering going the projector route for your home entertainment solution.

Sony Debuts New SRX-R515 4K Digital Projector

Sony recently debuted its brand new line of next-gen 4K digital projectors. What makes these projectors special, however, is that they are currently the very first 4K projectors in the industry to utilize high-pressure mercury lamps.

Known as the Sony SRX-R515 4K Digital Cinema Projection System, the physical device is currently being showcased at the CineEurope trade event currently in progress in Barcelona this entire week. Sony has specifically designed the SRX-R515 to be used in small or medium-sized screen auditoriums or for use in smaller cinemas that are working on a limited budget.

In addition to that, the SRX-R515 has been designed to offer brand new capabilities for purposes that are not too common in current projectors. This includes places like sports theaters and multi-user big-screen gaming, like tournaments or events.

According to Sony Digital Cinema's David McIntosh, this new compact projector comes with an increased flexibility with installation in smaller projection booths, which creates more operating space for smaller locations. McIntosh went on to say, "Blacks are incredibly detailed and we believe the picture quality with this projector, although it's lower cost and although it's aimed at a different market, the actual picture quality is astonishingly good, literally incredible."

McIntosh also added, "The smaller or medium-sized screen venues will be able to ensure that their customers are literally seeing the best possible picture on screen of any film that they're playing." The SRX-R515 comes with six high-pressure mercury lamps as opposed to the more traditional xenon lamps, which allows for quick and easy lamp replacement and a lower total cost of ownership for an estimated 10 years.

Sony Launches First 4K Projector

Sony has just recently launched its all new VPL-VW1000ES projector, claiming that this device is the world's first 4K projector, meaning it's pushing around 10,000,000 pixels. The company is also touting this device as its flagship projector and has currently only released the device in India. Whether or not it will make its way to other countries any time soon (if at all) still remains to be seen as Sony hasn't disclosed any information on that front just yet..

The VPL-VW1000ES utilizes an all new SXRD 4K panel, allowing it to produce a high contrast and 2,000 ANSI lumens of brightness. In addition to that, the VPL-VW1000ES can achieve an impressive 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio when paired with Sony's Iris3 technology. This resolution output allows the VPL-VW1000ES to produce images of up to 200" diagonally for, as Sony describes it, "awe-inspiring cinematic viewing in the comforts of the home."

According to a statement from Deputy General Manager, Professional Solution Division, Sony India Munetaka Sataru, "Our new VPL-VW1000ES 4K home theater projector has been created to not just meet, but exceed the needs of the most discerning and demanding home Picture9.png entertainment enthusiasts. It will allow them to become totally immersed in the viewing experience with the action unfolding before their eyes in a new level of realism."

Aside from supporting a 4K resolution, the VPL-VW1000ES also comes with Sony's Super Resolution 4K upscaler "Reality Creation", which is designed to enhance all content produced, whether it's SD, HD, 2D or 3D, to higher definition true 4K picture signals. This projector also has a built-in IR transmitter for Full 4K 3D, which drives the device's TDG-PJ1 active shutter 3D glasses. There is also Picture Position Memory, which memorizes the position of the zoom lens, and support for 2D and 3D anamorphic films.

A plethora of installation options also comes with the VPL-VW1000ES, including dual triggers, a 2.1 motorized zoom, expanded throw distances, an RS 232 interface, control over IP and compatibility with virtually every home automation integrator possible. You can pick up Sony's VPL-VW1000ES 4K projector for around $25,000 when it is released sometime this year.

Sony Unveils New 4K Resolution Home Cinema Projector

Just one week after Toshiba announced the first television with a 4K resolution, or a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, Sony has gone and challenged it by unveiling a new home cinema projector that offers the exact same thing on a much larger screen. Sony, you cheeky devil!

Known as the VW1000ES, this projector uses a new 4K SXRD, or Silicon X-tal Reflective Display, along with Sony's Iris3 technology in order to give you 12.5m pixel images at up to 200 inches in size. However, while this may seem like something truly magnificent and fantastic, there is one major drawback, the complete lack of 4K video content.

However, despite the lack of content, this projector does offer some great features. It is a full HD and 3D projector and uses an active shutter system as well as a built-in transmitter for full HD content. Just because there isn't any 4K content out at the moment does not mean that you can't enjoy some full 1080p HD or 3D content while you wait.

The main appeal with this device, at least for movie fans, is its ability to upscale regular Blu-ray movies to 4K resolution. This is all thanks to Sony's proprietary "Reality Creation" chip located in the device. The result of quadrupling the resolution is a "more immersive, engaging visual experience" according to Sony who added, "It should be like stepping up from DVD to Blu-ray all over again."

The VW1000ES 4K projector from Sony follows the more recently announced VW95ES and HW30ES and is set to hit the UK market first in January 2012. Pricing is still unannounced but I wouldn't expect this thing to be cheap. Expect to pay well over anything you would pay now for a top of the line projector.

Sony Unveils HDR-JP50 Handycam Projector

Sony's New HD Camcorders Featuring Built-in Projector Introduced at the CES

The 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) showed off a variety of fascinating aspects of technology that we can hopefully soon look forward to enjoying. One of the great devices that was introduced at the show was Sony’s newest camcorder technology. Now, the 3D camcorder that Sony introduced was definitely very cool, but according to Consumer Reports’ associate electronics editor Terry Sullivan, this newest piece of technology might be even cooler.

The line of camcorders that Sony introduced at the CES consisted of HD camcorders that come complete with a built-in projector. Sony says that the line will be known as the PJ series. There will be three different models known as the HDR-PJ50V, the HDR-PJ30V, and the HDR-PJ10.

I’m honestly very impressed with this series of camcorders that Sony will be releasing. The devices will all be able to project video and images up to 60 inches in size when standing 18 feet away. Each of the camcorders in the series will have stereo speakers built into them with S-Master digital amplifier and Clear Phase technologies.

They also will all feature very large hard drives, 1080/60p video recording, built-in GPS, Exmor-R image sensors, built-in USB, great optics, and other great features. Prices also aren’t too bad considering all the fantastic features that these camcorders offer. Sony is expected to release two of their camcorders from the PJ line in March with the third device available sometime in April. Here’s the breakdown of each model.

HDR-PJ50V: Available for about $1000 in April

Sony is allowing you bring the stunning big screen 3D experience found at the movie theater into your very own home. They have just announced their first 3D front projector, the new VPL-VW90ES.

The VPL-VW90ES is the first of Sony’s projectors to be branded with “Elevated Standards.” This means that the projector was engineered to have exceptionally high build quality and provide an outstanding video experience. Siegel says, “The VW90ES also shares the heritage of previously acclaimed Sony SXRD projectors delivering incredible 2D performance that rivals any competition in its class.”

The VPL-VW90ES uses a single Ultra High Performance lamp with a brightness of 1,000 ANSI lumens. It also utilizes Sony’s Advanced Iris 3 technology to deliver a sharp, deep black image that produces a contrast ratio of 150,000:1.

Now not only does the VPL-VW90ES provide excellent sound and picture quality, but as I mentioned previously, it also integrates with third-party control systems seamlessly. This projector joins the list of many of Sony’s other products that integrate easily with the top home theater automation systems including: Creston, Savant, Control4, AMX®, Ultimate Remote Control, Vantage, RTI, and many others. The VPL-VW90ES also includes AMX Device Discovery Beacon and is Control4 Certified.

Sony Unveils New Home Theater Line

Have you been thinking about converting a room into a home theater or gaming room? Or maybe you just want widescreen, high definitions movies in your living room or bedroom? Either way, Sony Australia has announced a line-up of new home theater projectors that promise to be great for any room in your house. The range has three new models: the VPLBW7, the Bravia VPLHW15, and the Bravia VPLVW85. The projectors will be available through Sony authorized AV dealers and IT distributors by the end of November 2009.

The VPLBW7 is the entry level model but according to Sony, lower price doesn't mean compromising quality. Its compact size makes it a great projector for any room in the house. Vincent Bautista, a product manager for Sony, calls it "heaven sent for apartment dwellers who may not have the long throw distances required for a traditional projector. It's low price ($1,795) also makes it attractive to average gaming and entertainment enthusiasts.

The Bravia VPLHW15 is the middle projector in the range and is designed specifically for movie buffs and home entertainers. The projector has SXRD technology which minimizes the the space between pixels and dot-less picture, regardless of the surface your image is being projected onto. It also responds to the light in the room and selects the optimum contrast levels automatically. Priced at $4,299, the VPLHW15 is a great piece of equipment for anyone who is looking for a "fully immersive home theater that doesn't break the bank," says Bautista.

The top model in the line is the Bravia VPLVW85 and it is made specifically for those looking for the ultimate home theater technology. The premium projector has already won the European Imaging and Sound Association Award for Best Product 2009-2001 in the video projector category. "The VPLVW85 gives consumers looking for the very best in home theatre exactly what they’ve been after. This projector delivers on the promise of a true cinematic experience for AV enthusiasts who are looking to give their home and family the best home theatre experience possible," Bautista said of the $8,999 projector.

All three projectors are designed to be flexible and easy for users to setup in their homes.
